Shelter Ministries of Dallas began operating Genesis Women's Shelter & Support in 1985 as a safe haven for women and children fleeing an immediate threat of domestic violence. To protect our clients' safety, our Emergency Shelter sits at an undisclosed location. Women and their children are welcome to stay at the emergency shelter for up to six weeks.
Each person staying in our Shelter attends weekly individual and group therapy for the duration of their stay. Additionally, Emergency Shelter children may attend the on-site alternative Simmons School. During this time, our Counselors and Case Managers guide them through the healing process and assist them in setting up a new life and a brighter future.
After a family has completed the 6 weeks stay at our emergency shelter, they are sometimes not able to live independently. Annie’s House allows them to stay up to 12 months in a private apartment, with access to tools and resources to build a safe, happy future.
Annie’s House allows women to create a place that is safe, loving and becomes the true definition of what a home should be. It is a place for women to bond with their children and re-establish relationships that may have been hurt in their past.
At Genesis, we know that women and children who have experienced domestic abuse benefit greatly from counseling support as they heal. Genesis opened our Non-Residential Outreach Counseling Office to provide individualized and group therapy for those who have experienced abuse but do not currently need shelter. Our 20 Outreach Counselors see more than 1,000 women and children each year, totaling more than 17,000 counseling hours.
We provide counseling services for both English and Spanish speakers. Our services are free and available to women of all ages as well as children and teens, including boys up to age 17.
