Medicaid provides free transportation for Texas Health Steps patients and most others who use Medicaid medical and dental services, provided they have no other mean of transportation to make it to receive medically necessary care services.
The Medical Transportation Program provides non-emergency medical transportation services for people who don’t have a way to get to covered health care services.
MTP can arrange a ride to a doctor’s office, dentist’s office, hospital, drug store or any place that provides covered health care services. It can also pay for a bus, train or airplane ticket; or pay a friend, family member or neighbor to take you to your covered health care services.
The program also provides meals and lodging for children and youth 20 and younger staying overnight to get covered health care services. It can also pay for some out-of-state travel to neighboring states (Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico).
MTP does not arrange emergency or non-emergency transportation by ambulance.
To get a ride through MTP, you can’t have any other means of transportation. You must also be enrolled in one of the following programs:
-Children with Special Health Care Needs
-Transportation for Indigent Cancer Patients
